vi problems

In vi when I scroll down if the line is to long it just repaints over itself and makes it very confusing to read.
How do I stop it from doing that.
The answer is as follows:
First for some reason my system does not like vt100 and perfers vt220 instead.
Next I tried as some suggested stty rows and columns command this was also helpful.
Lastly I needed to get rid of the tab3 setting in stty (no one suggested this I found out for myself)
