ftp question

Whenever files are added to one of these file stores it must be replicated to the other two. Currently we are using OpenSSH sftp as the replication protocol but the transfer rate is very very slow (~140 kbps).
Can anybody suggest a different version of ftp which initiates multiple streams for the data transfer.
These are all Solaris 9 boxes.
