vipw problems

On a solaris 9 machine...when i try to use vipw to edit the /etc/passwd
file (like you would in BSD with vi commands) i make the change but cant
save the file by doing either of the write & quit commands in vi

ZZ or :wq doesnt save & quit

however on a BSD system this works like the the typical vi program commands

I really dont want to mangle the passwd file ..

any help is greatly appreciated
