Use of maxcontig

the maxcontig value (option -C with the newfs command).
I have a software RAID-5 setup. OK, ok, ok, ok, I know that I should not
use this, but I have no choice, so I'm trying to make the best of it. I
created a RAID metadevice with Disksuite over 6 disks (each slice 15gb)
with an interlace size of 64k. Creating a 10gb file when the filesystem was
created with no options takes almost an hour. When I recreate the
filesystem with the option -C 120, then the filecreation takes around 30
minutes, so a remarkable performance increase. I'm now doing a test where I
ftp this 10gb file over from one node with such a RAID filesystem to
another node with a similar RAID filesystem and seem to take a long time.
The filesystem will contain a database which will be replicated on a
regular interval from the source node to the destination node. I have no
idea yet how this database will be used.
Does anyone have good ideas or some experience with this maxcontig
parameter ?
