[More information] CDE problems on console and remotely

Some additional info:

Authentication is done via the local /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow so
nothing interesting going on there. Furthermore, logging in via SSH is
super speedy so its not a problem with the login scripts.

I've been getting a lot of suggestions in looking at the .dtprofile, and
thats definitely not the problem because mine is empty.

I've looked into the /var/dt/Xerrors and the only thing I get is:
/usr/openwin/bin/xset: bad font path element (#44), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
