junk characters

I am facing the following problem.This has happend
during the installation of Netscape Web server.ls
command at root directory resulting junk characters.
Other than root directory it is working fine.
When junk characters are displayed, it eventually
changes the command prompt in to junk characters
and what ever you type at prompt,it will display junk
characters.
Please enlighten me and your help is highly
appreciated.
