sendmail question about relaying...

At my place our main email server does not allow relays, it runs on a non
unix platform and i have no control over it.
When i alias it as "mailhost" in /etc/hosts it keeps telling my my mails
are rejected because it does not allow relays.
Does default sendmail on solaris 8 try to relay thorugh this host?
how can i send emails from my solaris 8 hosts and use this email server
(its the only way to reach the outside world).
