A little help, please?

I've been of playing with other OSes alot lately and am running into a basic
issue that I'm sure someone here can answer, but I seem to be drawing a
blank.
I have a user who gets a "Login incorrect" message when telneting to a
Solaris 8 box. I suspect it has something to do with the length of his login
name (more than 8 characters), but I can't seem to find how to verify and/or
change that.
Can one of you be so kind as to refresh my memory?
