Naming service recomendation

2007-12-24 21:38:00

We are looking at implementing a naming service on some servers in the next
few months. However, we're not quite sure if we should go with NIS, NIS+ or
LDAP.

I have previously worked with both NIS and NIS+ and been quite happy with
it. However it seems like Sun is rather keen on getting everybody moved to
LDAP. We don't have any experience with LDAP whatsoever, and I suppose there
will be a lot of time spent learning and implementing LDAP as opposed to
taking the familiar NIS route.

If we decide to go with NIS+, I'm not too sure how well that will perform in
a mixed environment of Sun and HP (my experience with NIS+ is majorly on
Solaris with one or two HP clients).

Has anybody had similar thoughts on implementing naming services? I think
I'd prefer NIS personally, but not if Sun is stopping support for it in a
while.

Cheers,
Thorfinn
