SUMMARY: CPU idle time in Solaris 8

2007-12-25 3:55:00

Hi Gurus,
Thanks a lot for clarifying. I got lots of responses and very much
thankful to you all. The list is very big but to mention a few:
Darren Dunham
DarrenProg
Bossdad1959
Tristan Ball
Wade A. Lich
David P

Thanks Guys you rules.
Summary is:
Vmstat does not take into account iowait while calculating cpu idle time
where as top and mpstat does. So whenever there is a high iowait, vmstat
and top will show different results.

My Original Question was:

Hi Gurus,

I have a basic question regarding CPU Idle time in Solaris 8. I am
running Solaris 8 on Ultra 10 Box.

When I checked the CPU idle time from top utility it shows 12% idle
which is correct but at the same time if I check it from vmstat utility
it shows 90% idle. Is it normal behavior or some issue with the U10 box?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA
