Problem in Ftp

we are haveing a production server which is ( E3500) currently
Solaris 2.6 and the databse is Oracle 8.1.7.4 . Whenever am trying to do ftp
with this server from remote machine like Solaris it is connecting to the
server and asking for the username but whenever am giveing user name , it is
not asking password , it is directly giveing an error "Login Failed "
what could be the problem ? please any one can help me out ,
