Increasing a partition size

I would like to add 2g to an existing partition. Can I do this without
damaging the existing files?
There is adequate space on the hard drive for this, but the only way I know
of to do this is to
unmount the mount point, create a new partition, lay down a new filesystem,
and remount it on the
new larger partition.
