increasing Max number of group memberships

Today I've become privy to the fact that the maximum number of group
memberships in solaris 2.6 is 16. I have seen mention of this being the
value of the variable NGROUPS_MAX. Can this variable be modified by editing
/etc/system or other configuration file, and if so what are the possible
ramifications of doing so.
