[Solaris 7] RLOGIN

Problem: machine2 $ rlogin machine2 hangs for few
seconds and timesout.
Machine1 and 2: ultra5 with solaris 7, with no
patches.
Both machines are setup with appropriate necessary
entries in .rhosts, /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/hosts, and
/etc/services.
Machine 1: (Local) rlogin machine2 hangs and times
out.
Machine 2: (remote) rlogin machine1 works.
Machine1: (Local) telnet machine2 works fine.
Snoop shows proper activity, but no acknowledgement
from machine2.
Machine2: Any other machine in machine2's local area
works okay for rlogins. (Remote local machine$ rlogin
machine 2 work fine).
I have verified settings and hostname entries in all
the related files, everything looks okay.
Machine1 to Machine2 trace route results in a long
output (more than 6 hops) but machine2 can rlogin, so
that can't be worng.
did anyone face this problem, or have any informatio,
and places, and ideas for fixing this problem.
