Backup of a volume

I'm working on a sun E250, Solaris 2.8
I need to backup a 13GB volume (it is a directory not a whole file
system) on a 12G tape.
What do you suggest me?
Can i compress the data and restore the volume after backup?
And what if i have to span this volume on multiple tapes?
Do i have to use tar,cpio or ufsdump?
