"Error : No response from Ethernet network " in /var/adm/messages say
2007-12-24 20:26:00
Over the past few days I noticed that my telnet session to my Sun E450 =
running Solaris 8 would suddenly freeze and lose contact with the =
machine. I would then have to reconnect. Usually I would be able to =
contact the machine within 30 seconds.
I found these messages in my /var/adm/messages :
Jul 24 20:33:00 surya hme: [ID 786680 kern.notice] SUNW,hme0 : No =
response from Ethernet network : Link down -- cable problem?
Jul 24 21:40:59 surya hme: [ID 786680 kern.notice] SUNW,hme0 : Internal =
Transceiver Selected.
Jul 24 21:40:59 surya hme: [ID 786680 kern.notice] SUNW,hme0 : =
Auto-Negotiated 100 Mbps Full-Duplex Link Up
We have two more E450's - the above messages appear in their message log =
also. I am trying to understand what the problem is. Is it that the =
network is saturated ? Our LAN is very slow. And we face performance =
problems in other areas also.
I believe my E450 is losing contact and then again re-negotiating a =
connection.=20
I dont know much of networking - but this is what I have been able to =
understand :
The server room (and switch room) is in the basement. On the 3 floors of =
our bldg - all computers connect over 10 Mbps ethernet to a hub. The hub =
then sends the data down to the basement to a switch thats capable of =
"converting" 10 Mbps feed lines into 100 Mbps "outgoing lines" - which =
then connect to all the servers in our computer room in the basement. =
Our E450's have a router IP zz.zz.zz.zz mentioned in /etc/defaultrouter =
(I believe thats the IP of this hardware switch ). So from the looks of =
it - all packets going between the servers and PC's on the 3 floors =
above go via this switch zz.zz.zz.zz . I believe that would be a source =
of contention.=20
Am I right in my understanding ?
Is there anything that I can do at the Sun OS level of my E450 to help =
or diagonise or avoid such a problem ?
Further what are the potential affects of such "connectivity breaks" ?
What is "Internal Transceiver Selected" ?
Thanks and Regards,
~aslam
