UPDATE: Netgear FS105 and Ultra1

2007-12-24 21:45:00

Thanks to all for your responses. I've heard from several people who
are using Netgear FS105s and Ultras without any problem. I went out and
bought another FS105 tonight and tried plugging my Ultra1 in. The
result was....the same. Basically, I've now experienced the same
behavior (my Ultra1 intermittently falling off the wire) using all of
these:

Two separate network cards (the built-in le and the hme I bought)
Two different (same model) switches and different ports on each
All available duplex/speed settings on the Ultra1
Two different CAT5 cables

So, it's not a hardware problem with my original switch. It's not the
cabling, it's not the NIC, and it's not a duplex issue. What else could
it be?

Thanks,
Dave LaPorte

Subject: Netgear FS105 and Ultra1

Hello all,

I recently bought a Netgear FS105 100Mb desktop switch to replace an old
3Com 10Mb hub and ran into a strange problem. My Ultra1 (runnind
Solaris 8) would intermittently drop off the wire and reappear after
about a minute of so. Figuring that the card was too old to let the
switch negociate properly, I bought a 100Mb hme card for the Ultra1.
The problem still persists, though. Thinking that it could be a duplex
issue, I've set the Ultra to 100 half, 100 full, and auto. Each time
the switch "sees" the Ultra properly (if I'm to believe the duplex and
activity lights on the switch), but the machine still drops every minute
or so. I've tried different ports on the switch and have the same
behavior, so I'm guessing its not a hardware problem. "netstat -in"
shows no errors.

I'm starting to think that the switch just doesn't like the Ultra1...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
David LaPorte
