GCC installation problem

I've just installed GCC onto an ultra 5 running Solaris 7.
When I try to run ./configure on a set of source files I get an error
message:
The relevant line in the configure is : checking whether the C compiler (gcc
-g ) works ... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C complier cannot
create executables.
This setup works on other machines and I can't see any differences.
Anybody got any ideas?
