best practice for backup tools for root disk recovery

Fellow Gurus -

I want to make once a month backups of remote root disks over the
WAN. I can't jumpstart my boxes in other states. What do you consider
the best practice:

A) Veritas Netbackup/Legato if you have it, install client software
and never mind how many hours it takes to run. Restored image is not
bootable without intermediate restore to standby disk and /etc/vfstab
meddling.

B) gnu tar, seems like options like --one-file-system would work, but
my testing usually has the single output file blow up at 1.1GB when
it tries to process the door files in /etc and socket files in /var.

C) ssh/ufsdump over the WAN

D) Should I try harder to learn FLASH (flar) archives?

E) ?

Thanks
JV
