SAN and HP tape library

to a HP MSL5000 tape library with LTO Gen2 tape drives using a qlogic 2300
fibre channel card.
I have drivers installed for the qlogic cards and have edited the st.conf
and qla2300.conf files and have entries in /dev/rmt for the tape devices
but when I use the tape devices with tar or other backup software I get
very bad performance, 11 gig in 33 mins only just beats a network backup
which does 11 gig in 40 mins.
Also the qlogic cards are used to access a disk array and this is working
fine.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong or have an install
procedure for connecting tape devices to a solaris system via a SAN in
case I have missed something.
