installing gcc

I have a problem about gcc installation. I want to install from
gcc-3.1.tar.gz f}le. (I know there is an easy way to compile with pkgadd
command by using gcc-3.0-sol8-sparc-local file for SUN ). But I want to
learn difficult way, because I have to compile gcc on HP and SGI systems,
and same error occured.
Anyway
There is no cc, c++, F77 on system. and by installing gcc file I obtain
them. but when I run configure script, it wanted cc.
What should I do?
