Performance benchmarking tools

2007-12-24 20:06:00

Greetings Again All,

I just posted a summary to my gigabit ethernet performance problems.
The bottom line was that I wasn't using the right tool for the job, despite
the fact that I had used three different tools to attempt to test the
performance of our gigabit ethernet network.

Now, as anyone who's done any performance benchmarking knows, you
should never use just one tool when doing performance benchmarking. The
vendors know this; that's why they try several different benchmarks and
then use the one that gives the best results in their advertisements! ;-)

This whole experience with benchmarking gigabit ethernet has left me
with a nagging question: how does one ensure that they're using the
appropriate tool(s) for the job? rcp and ftp had proved fine for testing
fast ethernet. Consequently, I wasn't even aware of ttcp. Does anyone
have any recommendations on any web sites, magazine articles, books, etc.
concerning performance benchmarking tools? I'd prefer web sites,
especially if they provide the ability to download the various tools.

Thanks once again. I think that the number of people who responded to
my previous post shows yet again what a valuable resource this list is. Of
course, I'll summarize...
