ADDENDUM: Weird problem with Solaris 7 & bash

After logging as myself, uing bash, I see the garbled display. But if I
ssh to localhost, as myself again, then everything works fine.
I've tried setting TERM to vt100 (default is sun which causes programs to
think the display has more lines than it actually has) but it doesn't
change anything.
