Although there were several suggestions, almost none of them worked.
What did work was backing down several versions of gd, gcc, and removing
binutils. Binutils seemed to be the biggest culprit of my problems. I
don't know why, but it was.
removed binutils freeware package
installed older gd1.3 package
downgraded to gcc2.95
