^H characters in man command redirected to a text file ...

Until our ISP resolves my newsgroups problem, I have another post.
I don't have a printer connected to our Sun machines, so I print off my
Win95 client to the defaulr printer. As a result I have to redirect man
pages to .doc files which I then print from Microsoft Word. The document
usually has some boxes between the command options whcih are evidently
caused by the translation of the man formatted document into word.
Even when I vi the document it has the _^H characters. I can do a global
search and replace in vi to remove the _ however it does not work for the ^H
which translates to a small square when opened in M_Word.
Perhaps there is a utility that can fix the man formatting on unix.
This is all leading to independence from this forum.
I appreciate your ideas and comments even under the threat of being
castigated.
Regards,
Denmark W.
