monitoring solution

I've been charged with looking into monitoring solutions for a network
with Solaris x86/sparc, Linux and Windows hosts. I'm trying to get a
handle on what people out there use. I need to be able to monitor/alert
on certain conditions and I also need to be able to track long term data
for trend analysis. Ease of use is key as well.
I would very much appreciate your opinion on what's out there, what's
good and what to avoid. I am happy to summarize this information as a
quick google search didn't yield a comprehensive list of software.
