trees. Darren Dunham very kindly reminded me that one can't verify a
mounted file system. That was indeed my only problem. And when I looked at
the script file that I had been using for several years for backups to the
old drive, I even noted that to myself in there.
So the drive does indeed work, using only the HPDAT entry in the st.conf
file under Solaris 7.
Thanks for all your time and responses.

Subject: HP DAT40 Tape Drive
Hi all:
After several frustrating hours going around the HP site looking for info; I
thought I would try here, before I start pounding on my mouse.
Recently picked up an HP SureStore DAT40 drive, model C5687A. Thought it
would be a great improvement over my EXB-8200. Hooked it to my Sparc 20,
running Solaris 7. Went into the st.conf file and uncommented the line for
'HPDAT'. The system recognized the drive. I used 'mt' to erase and then
retension a tape, that has only been used about 3 times. That went okay.
But when I tried the 'ufsdump' with the verify option, the backup fails
every time. "Verification error 42 feet into tape 1." If I select yes to
retry the backup, the distance into the tape changes, but the backup never
succeeds.
The exact command I use is:
ufsdump afuv /export/home/temp/dumplist /dev/rmt/0m /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0
Anybody have any insights as to what is going wrong?
TIA for any help, and I will summarize.
