reset root password on Sun 6120 array

Does anyone know how to reset the root password on a 6120? I tried
booting the array with a serial console attached and then running
"set password newpasswd", but i still can't login through telnet.
Sun support claims that this can only be done by a field engineer,
but that doesn't seem reasonable..
