power up init state config

I need this answer by Monday and I haven't found anything in man pages,
answerbooks or just poking around on the system. Running Solaris 2.5.1
(SunOs 5.5.1) on an Ultra 2. How do I toggle the boot so it goes to
single-user (^D message) or directly to multi-user (dtlogin) ? I suspect
it's an NVRAM variable, init or /etc/default toggle but for the life of me,
I'm stuck.

When I boot the machine normally, it boots straight to the graphical login
screen. In order to get to single-user maintenance mode, I'll either do a
boot -s from NVRAM (ok prompt) or reboot -- -s from Unix command line.

I have 1 user who's machine is booting directly to single user (^D message)
and I can't figure it out (you'd think I just started doing this :-)

Anyone out there that can pull me out of this ditch ? Appreciate any info
on the subject and/or pointers to appropriate doc/resources.
