poweroff vs shutdown ?

2007-12-24 19:10:00

I have an UE450, Sol 2.6 w/ a large external diskpack
(450G logging metadavice ) as well as a couple of other disks.

I needed to poweroff this machine (to add extra memory) so I gave the
machine the poweroff command.

The machine wne tthrough it's poweroff sequence, telling me
that it was shutting down various processes, then it told me it couldn't do
something to automount as automountd wasn;t running (which was starnge
because automount certainly was running when I gave the poweroff command).

The large extenral diskpack kept showing a *LOT* of activity,
while nothing was happening anymore on the console, and then all of a
sudden the UE450 powered off (while to my eyes it looked as if the diskpack
was still writing data).

I thought that poweroff (and halt) should unmount all disks before powering
off/halting , as would shutdown.

The man pages (for Sol 2.6) do not give me much clue .

Does poweroff/halt indeed unmount all drives ?
(the other drives on the system were cleanly unmounted according to the
bootlog).

If so, why was I still seeing diskactivity when the machine powered down ?

What is the difference between halt, poweroff and shutdown ?

Kind regards,
