Restore servers

I have a tape drive on a remote server, I am making plans to quickly restore a servers after crashes.
When a server crashes I want to quicky jumpstart and install the core system support which won't take much time to install, after configuring on network I will restore OS from Tape backups which will restore entire distribution.
My question is if I overwrite the core system support with entire distribution, I haven't tried this will it work?.
