PPP gateway precedence over LAN gateway (Offtopic)

I just setup a Linux box which has a local gateway for connecting to the
world. When i dialup to an ISP thru' the box, the ISP gateway is not addded
to the routing table, so the serial connection remains unutilized. Do i
need to configure something here? I installed gated in the hope of having
routing dynamically managed but that doesn't seem to have helped.
If i dialup thru' a Windows box i get the normal behaviour, that is, the
serial connection taking precedence over the ethernet gateway.
