Disappearing files...?

Hello All,
I am having a most interesting problem with my E450 Server running
Solaris 8. I got a message from a user the other day who claimed that
one of her files "disappeared". Upon investigating, I discovered that
the file is not displayed by /usr/bin/ls, but if I look at it with
the CDE File Manager (filemgr), or I use shell tab-completion after the
"more" command, the file can be seen. I can edit the file as well, it
just does not show up in the /usr/bin/ls directory listing. =20
Another interesting point is that /usr/ucb/ls _will_ show the file. I
was worried that it might be a filesystem problem, so I took the
system down and fsck'ed all the file systems, with no luck. I have
verifyed that the file in question has a valid inode, and is attached
to the filesystem. I have also noticed that this problem persists
when the file is copied to different filesystems or disks. I have
even gone so far as to use truss to compare the differences between a
normal, successful run of ls on a file, and an ls on this
"disappearing" one, with no appreciable differences.
My logs show no abnormalities, metastat says that my stripes are ok,
fsck is telling me my filesystems are fine, but this problem has
appeared with more of my files over the last few days. I have
installed the latest recommended patch cluster as well (March 23).
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or what I might
do to resolve it? I am in desperate need of help.
Please reply to me directly, as I am not currently subscribed to this
list.
Thanks a lot,
Steve
