Prevent core file overwriting

One of our developers is working on an application that dumps core when it
has a problem. The user needs the core file to analyze it. But what happens
is that if there is already an existing core file, it gets overwritten. Is
there a way that the new (or existing) core file can be renamed by the
system (or shell) so that all core files are preserved?
