Summary - A GUI CRON Utility
2007-12-24 19:32:00
I'm relativity new to UNIX and Solaris system admin.
I've searched the archives and FAQ and also the web
and haven't found what I'm interested in.
I have a customer that doesn't like crontab -e; he
would prefer a GUI type scheduler. So does anyone
recommend a GUI (HTML or other) interface to CRON on
Solaris 2.6 or Solaris 8.
Thanks

Hi Kathy,
One of the best GUI tools for 'less than experienced'
Unix types (which
sometimes includes me :>) is Webmin.
Webmin runs in a browser, is all written in Perl, and
is GPL. It has
modules for just about everything you can think of,
and has completely
customizable user access.
You can find it at http://www.webmin.com.
I run it on all my Solaris boxes, and just wouldn't
want to be without
it.
Hope this helps.

There are a couple of batch schedular software'e you
can try the one i
used
was LSF. It is a GUI tool also multi-platform, but
can't really call it
a
crontab versioned gui. It is actually a client-server
architecture
kinda
stuff.. where you can schedule on all the machines
from the server.
Hope this helps...

Wellllll first of all i'd tell your customer to stop
whining.
I can't believe someone is complaining about the cron
interface.
I mean, can this person be more high maintenance?
Doesn't want to
learn
vi?
OK, off my soapbox. Surf to
http://www.bossconsulting.com/sysadmin/
and click on the "3rd party" products link. Scroll
down (or search)
for the "Scheduling" apps and you might find something
you're looking
for.

I know of two packages:
One by Tidal Software - it is multi-platform
Another called Maestro - forgot who makes it or
whether it's multi-platform
I have not used either one personally, all I know
is that they're expensive.
Good Luck,

Yes, there is an Xwindows interface program. I don't
remember name but it is in O'Reilly's Xwindows
Power-Tools book.
Hope this helps...

Kathy,
There is web-based admin utility utilizing
Perl scripts I use
that
is very nice for non -Unix users. There is a version
for Solaris as well
.
It can be found at http://www.webmin.com/
webmin is a powerful
web-based administration interface for Unix systems.
Using Webmin you
can
configure DNS, Samba, NFS, local/remote
filesystems,cron jobs and more
using
your web browser.
