print accounting

Short:
Need to count number of pages printed on the printer per job. Using the
mechanical metering device on the printer is not a reasonable solution. We
would be susceptible to operator errors. Xerox says they do not have a
software-based mechanism to account for the number of printed pages.
And more detail:
We have a Xerox 4635 high performance printer with an Ultra SPARC 60 acting as a
controller. The printer is connected to the Ultra via a Xerox proprietary
adapter and a cable. Print is controlled by Xerox software installed on the
Ultra. The printer does not have a network card, Ultra 60 is the device with an
IP. No Solaris-style print queues can be created on this system. The Ultra is
on a Fast Ethernet segment. There is only one client (a mainframe) submitting
print requests to the printer via the Ultra. The mainframe submits print jobs
to the SPARC's IP address and port 5001. Our organization has no access to the
mainframe, thus we can't count records on the mainframe side. The print stream
is IPDS. Files are not and can not be saved on the Ultra 60 during and after
printing. Xerox software will not allow that. Xerox says that IPDS requires a
permanent connection between the printer and the mainframe, so there is no
option for spooling now and printing later. So much for being able to examine a
file while in the spool directory.
Will gladly hear ideas.
