Cannot mail to mail server

2007-12-25

codeprof,

I am trying to forward email messages from a local account on a local
sun machine to an internal email server but have been unsuccessful thus
far and need some help. This is my first mail/sendmail adventure.

The local sun machine is an E450 (4x400mhz CPUs, 3GB memory).
The internal email server is a Windows 2000 Exchange server. I cannot
confirm that the email is reaching the w2k-exchange server.

I have tried creating a ~joe/.forward file. This forwards the mail to
other local accounts (oracle, root, etc.) but not for the email
accounts on the email server (joe at foo.com). Setting up aliases in the
/etc/aliases file (and running newaliases) is also successful with the
local accounts but not with the email server accounts.

I would assume that the configuration file needs a change before the
E450 can forward the email to the w2k-exchange server. I don't know
how to do this and haven't found anything that explains the process in
a way that I can understand.

Running mail -x -1 joe < test.txt created a log file (MLDBGsxaiyU).
Here are the contents

main(): debugging level == 1
main(): trace file ='/tmp/MLDBGsxaiyU': kept on success or failure.
sendmail(): entered
new_reciplist(): entered
add_recip(): 'joe at foo.com' added to recipient list
pushlist(): hdrtype = 8/From , contflg = 0, saved value = 'root Tue Nov
12 16:21
EST 2002'
sendmail(): header scan complete, readahead 46 = "this is a test of
joe at foo.com email ID
"
pushlist(): hdrtype = 4/Content-Type:, contflg = 0, saved value = ''
pushlist(): hdrtype = 3/Content-Length:, contflg = 0, saved value = ''
sendmail(): header out completed
sendmail(): body copy complete, count 46
done(): maxerr set to 0
done(): temp file removed

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
