Cannot mount root on /pseudo/md at 0:0,0,blk fstype ufs

I had a few issues building a mirrored system, and have just put back my old
vfstab, however now when i try first boot i get
Cannot mount root on /pseudo/md at 0:0,0,blk fstype ufs
and Panics, and boot loops.
I have again boot cdrom -s - mounted /etc in /a to check the vfstab is now
correct and back using disk device paths rather than md paths,
Clues ?
